From Student to Champion: Prabjot’s Journey

Prabjot began her learning journey with Adult Education two and a half years ago after hearing about Family Learning sessions at St Luke's Primary School. She joined because she wanted to improve her confidence and build a better future for herself and her children.

Her first courses were Digital Skills for Parents and Online Safety for Parents, which helped increase her confidence and encouraged her to continue learning. She then joined Phonics for Parents and English classes in the community, where she continued to develop her skills and self-belief.

Prabjot says:
"I really struggled with confidence and believing in myself because of issues in my personal life and having just come out of an abusive relationship. As a single mother of three children, it was difficult to find time to do something for myself. Family Learning sessions helped me believe in myself again and helped me to be me again."

Through her learning journey, Prabjot has improved her confidence, resilience, timekeeping and organisation. Attending courses also gave her the opportunity to meet new people, which had a positive impact on her wellbeing.

More recently, Prabjot was introduced to the Choices Programme, where she successfully completed a six-week volunteering course and became a Choices Champion. During the programme, she met with a headteacher and local professionals to explore opportunities for the future - something she says she would never have had the confidence to do without the help provided through the Choices Programme.

As part of the programme, Prabjot completed a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate, obtained a DBS check, and secured a volunteering placement at St Luke's Primary School, where her children attend. She will be volunteering as a Parent Reader, supporting other parents who may be in the same situation she was in two and a half years ago.

Prabjot's future goal is to gain employment within the next year. She believes that volunteering will help her gain valuable experience, develop new skills and continue building her confidence.

"I am really grateful to Adult Education for all the opportunities they have provided me."
