Subject Information

People learn BSL for many different reasons:

  • To communicate better with a family member, friend, or colleague.
  • For work, either to support their deaf colleagues or to offer a more inclusive service for customers.
  • Others choose to learn out of curiosity and to become more open minded about celebrating the diverse society we live in.

You can study BSL as a complete beginner and can progress to national qualifications with us. The introductory course for beginners includes deaf awareness and basic signing skills. If you already have some knowledge of BSL or are a regular signer, you may be ready to join one of our higher-level classes leading to national qualifications at levels 1 and 2. We also offer short deaf awareness courses, both online and face to face, that provide insights into the Deaf community and practical ways to overcome communication barriers. Our informal Signing for Wellbeing courses are for those who would like to enhance any aspect of wellbeing through learning to sign in a group.

Please refer to our family learning section if you are interested in learning to sign through family learning.

Joining our courses unlocks a rich and vibrant culture, promotes good communication skills and helps towards creating an ever more inclusive society. All our BSL teachers are experts in their subject, they have many years’ experience of teaching and are members of the Deaf community.

These courses will help you to think creatively, solve problems and provide you with transferable skills useful for everyday life and for any job. BSL related jobs may include teacher of the Deaf, British Sign Language interpreter, communication support worker, SEND teaching assistant and teacher, FE lecturer, play worker, youth worker, all types of public-facing roles and much more.
