Food for thought!
During the autumn term students studying on the Life Skills, Move On course learnt about the growing need for food banks, and how more people than ever are being forced to use them to help support themselves and their families.
The Trussell Trust, which runs two-thirds of the UK's food banks, reported that it had distributed a record 823,145 food parcels between April and September, including 301,653 that went to children. This was a 23% increase on the same period last year, representing the steepest rise the charity has witnessed since its network of food banks was fully established.
Today in the City of Wolverhampton there are families and single people struggling to buy food and other essentials. For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis can mean going hungry.
In response to this students decided to set up food collection boxed at Adult Education's main site and the Maltings. They collected a wide range of items that they then delivered to the local Charity 'Well'.
During the term the students also participated in one of their annual enterprise projects. Students created a whole range of Christmas related crafts that they went on to sell at their annual Christmas craft fair. Students democratically decided to use some of the profits from the fair to purchase food and essentials to donate to the food bank. The group researched what was essential and made a list of things that could be purchased as part of their contribution. They considered items required to make simple meals, basic toiletries, cleaning products and even added a few seasonal treats.
The collection was a great success and the group were able to donate 107kg of food and other essentials. The group would like to thank everyone who made generous donation and a special thanks goes to Dianne Gordon, Site Officer for her support with transportation.
