For the love of Reading

For the love of Reading

As part of our ‘what do you love about learning’ promotion, Life Skills students are being encouraged to read more and develop a ‘love of reading’.

Two Life Skills English groups visited Wolverhampton central library on 24th January where they took part in a 'library detectives' group activity. By the end of the tour, each student chose a book and was shown how to borrow it, using the self-service machine.

Following on from this, in class students' read alone or to staff for 10 minutes.  It was a delightful time, with all students really engaging well and enjoying what they were reading.  Feedback from all involved was really positive, including how students tried really hard to read more difficult words and some wanted to read the books several times.

Knowing that it would be difficult for students to visit the library each week within class time as classes are based at the Maltings, the groups have decided to create their own library on site so that they will have quick and easy access to a bank of books when attending classes at the Maltings. The potential benefits are huge. It will provide a simulated work activity where students can take it in turn to take part in librarian duties such as labelling books, stamping dates, tracking book returns, stacking books in alphabetical order and serving borrowers. There will also be wider benefits to be gained including understanding and appreciating books, reading for pleasure, researching, time management, development of creative thinking, development of communication, team work, responsibility and independence to name a few.

To facilitate this, we are asking for donations of books, suitable for any age or level.
