Family and Community Learning
What is Family Learning
Adult Education Wolverhampton is now delivering a wide range of free short courses which are based on the needs of the students. We currently deliver in several schools around Wolverhampton and some community centres. Coffee mornings have helped us to meet with potential learners and to see what kind of courses they need, based on this we have been able to create tailored courses to suit their needs and the needs of their families and children.
The benefits of Family Learning
Our courses are aimed at helping the individual to feel more confident, get back into learning, or to prepare them for the world of work. Our courses also help individuals to help their children. For example, the parenting course aims to help parents use better strategies at home, help their children with homework, and communicate better with the school. The ICT course has helped parents to use the school VLE more confidently to email and communicate with teachers.
How students benefit and where can it lead
Students go from saying very little to being able to go to the front of the class to do short presentations. They gain confidence and resilience. Students are more confident to ask about other courses on offer as well as enquiring about how to get back into work, creating a CV and applying for jobs.
In most cases, our Family learning students go on to complete further learning and gain qualifications to enhance their career prospects.
Baljit Kaur
"The Family Learning sessions have been great, they have given me confidence and a great deal of knowledge. These skills have enabled me to help my children with their schoolwork which is very rewarding. My newfound confidence has given me the motivation to apply for a job and I now work as a lunchtime supervisor at a primary school.
Family Learning has given me the enthusiasm to continue my learning and the confidence to pursue work. I hope to go on to gain English and maths qualifications with AEW and I will be applying for jobs to work as a teaching assistant".
Chantal Walcott – has completed Basic ICT, Online Safety and is currently doing Driving Theory
"Classes have helped me to gain more confidence and to learn topics that I would never have been able to understand on my own. English is not my first language but the lessons are made simple for me to understand. I have 3 children, 2 children with special needs. My husband works long hours and works away so I have to do a lot on my own and the lessons have helped me to do things for myself.
The driving theory course has helped me to learn tips on how to pass my test and also helped me to improve my written and spoken English as we have to do a lot of reading and teamwork.
The ICT course helped me to be able to practice my theory test online and be safe online, I would not have been able to do this before as I had never used a computer."
