Anna Smith

At the age of 16 I began A Level Art at Wolverhampton Adult Education Service (WAES). After my A Levels I chose to pursue a career in Accounting. In 2003 a life changing experience meant that I could no longer work, I became disabled and I lost all my confidence and thought that I would never have a future in anything. With all the spare time on my hands, I decided to enrol on a few general art courses at WAES.

I had always enjoyed art but had never considered becoming a serious artist. I came to study at the Service as it was local to me and I would be studying with other adults in a similar situation, rather than going to college with younger people straight from school. The tutors from WAES, especially Dave Westwood and Tina Willis-Jones, inspired and encouraged me to take my art practice more seriously. I enrolled in a Pre-Access Course in 2007 and the following year I continued my studies on the Access to Art and Design Course.

In 2009 I began a full time Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA Hons) Degree at the University of Wolverhampton in which I achieved a First. I am now currently finishing my Master's Degree (MA) in Fine Art. Over the past 10 years I have come a long way from having art as a hobby to pass the time, to now being a practising artist. I have just been awarded a bursary from The Grand Union Artspace, Birmingham for an exhibition in February and my work has also been accepted in the 'New Art West Midlands 2014' show.

After studying at the Service I became much more confident and I set myself goals to strive for. I am now a confident practising artist and in my final year of my Master's Degree. I have been motivated to learn which has made me a happier and well balanced person. Instead of shying away because of my disability, I no longer let it inhibit me from things I want to try. I would say that the WAES is the best place for like-minded adults to learn. The tutors are excellent at helping to guide you and give you the confidence needed to attain skill sets for life.

I am currently finishing my MA and after will be a practising artist. This year I have work exhibiting at the Birmingham Museum and at the Art Gallery's 'New Art West Midlands 2014' show, The Grand Union Bursary Exhibition and also at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
