Before coming to study at Wolverhampton Adult Education Service, I previously worked as a care manager at a home in Tettenhall. I found the job used up a lot of my own time and somehow felt I had lost part of my identity as I didn't have the time to invest in myself. I decided it was time to explore my creative side in the knowledge that my husband and father- in-law were running a wedding car hire business. There was scope in this business as lots of people wanted to know where they could find someone who specialised in wedding flowers. This encouraged me to look for a course. I had had previous experience in floristry before doing the course, but I wanted a recognised qualification so that I could start my own business.
On the first day of my course I felt apprehensive and excited. We started floristry from scratch, creating arrangements comprehensively from start to finish and then capturing our creations in the form of photographs. The course was very in-depth and professional and we learnt valuable knowledge of the flowers and foliage we were using, learning their Latin origins and seasonal availability. This made the course more interesting. It answered a lot of questions and gave me the satisfaction and the knowledge that I could set up a professional business and achieve my goals. I particularly enjoyed creating a Victorian posy. It was a challenge as every flower had to be wired and was very tricky to do; however, I felt a great sense of achievement making it.
The advantage of learning floristry at the Service is that you are taught a craft to a high standard, a professional standard, which makes all the difference. I am currently working towards my Level 2 and would like to continue to Level 3 as I am hoping to one day display my qualifications in my future business.
To anyone thinking of doing a course as the Adult Education Service, I would say put your talents to work; opportunities are out there so go and discover them.
