Additional Support that meets the needs of learners who have a disability or learning difficulty is provided through the ALS team. This support may be delivered in a range of different ways, in a variety of settings including:
Within the classroom delivery
1:1 or 1: few in small meeting rooms around Service
Within an examination setting
Where appropriate, Additional Support staff can offer:
Opportunities to visit the Service in 'taster' sessions to help you become familiar with it
Support with the application and enrolment procedures
One-to-one support and guidance (including regulars reviews of progress and support needs)
Communication Support Workers (signers for the deaf)
More wide-ranging in-class support from a specialist support teacher
Support in the form of note-taker in lessons
Small group sessions to work on study skills
Specialist screening for dyslexia
Where appropriate, the Service can offer learners use of the following
equipment
Dictaphones
Specialist software e.g. for learners with a visual impairment, Braille printer, touch screens
Headphones
Ergonomic Keyboards and adapted keyboards
Laptop computers for use in and out of the classroom
However if there is an identified need for any equipment, the service is usually able to arrange for it.
Where appropriate, the Service can offer Learners the following examination
support:
Extra time allowance (subject to assessment evidence)
Large print papers/papers on different coloured paper
